The Whisper Man: Robert De Niro and Adam Scott Lead a Chilling Netflix Thriller
Netflix has released the official trailer for The Whisper Man, a psychological thriller based on Alex North's New York Times bestselling novel. The film premieres globally on August 28, 2026.
Adam Scott stars as Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son, Jake (Acston Luca Porto), is abducted. With few options left, Tom is forced to turn to his estranged father, Pete (Robert De Niro) — a retired police detective — for help. "Son, I'm sorry that it took this to get us together," Pete tells him in the trailer. Tom's cold response: "We're not together. This is me asking you for help."
As the investigation unfolds, father and son uncover a disturbing connection to a decades-old case: the original "Whisper Man," a serial killer named Frank Carter whom Pete arrested more than thirty years earlier. The unsettling twist is that Carter has been behind bars ever since — raising the question of how the killings could possibly be happening again. Michelle Monaghan plays Amanda Beck, the detective drawn into the case alongside them.
The film is anchored by a haunting playground rhyme that runs through the story, warning that if a door is left half open or a window unlatched, "The Whisper Man will come for you." The trailer ends on a particularly eerie note, with the discovery of a cassette tape labeled "Jake" — and a sinister voice on it asking a chilling question.
The ensemble cast also includes Michael Keaton, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, John Carroll Lynch, and Will Brill. The Whisper Man is directed by James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen, Coming Home in the Dark), with a screenplay by Chase Palmer and Ben Jacoby. It's produced by AGBO — the Russo brothers' production company — marking their sixth collaboration with Netflix following hits like Extraction and The Gray Man.
