The Dog Stars: Ridley Scott Takes on a Post-Apocalyptic World in New Survival Epic
20th Century Studios has released the final trailer for The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott's adaptation of Peter Heller's bestselling post-apocalyptic novel. The film arrives exclusively in theaters, IMAX, and premium large formats on August 28.
Jacob Elordi stars as Hig, a young pilot who, alongside military survivalist Bangley (Josh Brolin), has carved out an isolated but functional homestead in a world devastated by a global pandemic. "The world that was doesn't exist," Brolin's voice intones over shots of wild dogs roaming a deserted Denver City Hall. "Here it's just us, trying to hold onto what was." Hig and his dog scout the wasteland in his yellow biplane, quietly reliving memories of the life he once had.
Everything changes when Hig intercepts a mysterious transmission on his radio — a signal that convinces him other survivors might still be out there. That search leads him to Cima (Margaret Qualley), with whom he forms an immediate bond, though not everyone shares his trust. Guy Pearce's character warns that Hig is an "unknown," and unknowns come with rules of their own.
The film's ensemble also includes Allison Janney and Benedict Wong. Scott has reportedly called The Dog Stars his best film since The Martian. The screenplay comes from Mark L. Smith, whose credits include The Revenant and Twisters, and the film is produced by Scott alongside Michael Pruss, Smith, and Cliff Roberts, with Lily Brooks-Dalton, Brandon Scott Smith, Peter Heller, and Aidan Elliott serving as executive producers. Reports put the production budget above $100 million.
Balancing survival tension with a quieter meditation on grief and isolation, The Dog Stars looks to be one of the more introspective entries in Scott's long career of large-scale filmmaking — a story less about outrunning the end of the world than finding a reason to keep believing in what's left of it.
