Warner Bros. Pictures is set to release Digger, an upcoming satirical comedy from acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, in theaters (including IMAX) on October 2, 2026. The film marks Iñárritu's first English-language project since The Revenant (2015), and reunites him with longtime collaborators Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone on the screenplay.
Tom Cruise leads the film as Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon whose story follows a darkly comic premise: the most powerful man in the world races to prove he's humanity's savior before the very disaster he unleashed destroys everything.
Cruise is joined by a striking ensemble cast, including Riz Ahmed as Ganesh, John Goodman as the President of the United States, along with Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D'Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Sophie Wilde, Pip Torrens, and Mercedes Hernández.
The project came together after Cruise and Iñárritu first began discussing the film back in 2019, while Cruise was shooting Top Gun: Maverick. Cruise, a longtime admirer of Iñárritu's directorial debut Amores perros, signed on following his strategic partnership with Warner Bros.
Principal photography took place at Pinewood Studios in the UK from November 2024 to May 2025, under the working title Judy. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki shot the film on 35mm using VistaVision cameras fitted with Leica lenses — a technical choice that signals the visual ambition behind the project. Filming was briefly paused in March 2025 after John Goodman sustained a minor hip injury.
The title Digger was officially unveiled in December 2025 alongside a 50-second teaser set to Gorillaz's "O Green World." Around the same time, reports revealed the film had been greenlit with a $125 million budget, part of Warner Bros.' broader push toward auteur-driven filmmaking under studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy — a strategy that also produced 2025 hits Sinners and One Battle After Another.
With Industrial Light & Magic and Legacy Effects handling visual effects, Digger looks positioned as one of the more distinctive awards-season contenders of late 2026.
